Guess the Word: Imposter + Charades (Free, 2026)

Play Guess the Word with friends. Two modes: Word Imposter and Charades. 150+ words, 2-10 players, runs from one phone. Built free on MuleRun Chat.

Guess the Word is a free browser party game you play by passing one phone around the group. It includes two modes: Word Imposter (find the bluffer) and Charades (act it out). Both support 2-10 players with 150+ built-in words across categories and difficulty levels. One of the best games to play with family or friends.

What Is Guess the Word and How Do You Play It?

A group of friends needed a party game that worked from a single phone with no apps to download. One of them described the concept in MuleRun Chat and got back Guess the Word, a two-mode party game running on the web. Pass the phone, play a round, pass it again. Works anywhere with a browser.

MuleRun Chat is an AI chat that builds web pages, games, and tools from plain language descriptions. You describe the game, Chat writes the code, and you get a shareable link.

Guess the Word offers two modes on one screen:

  1. Word Imposter: everyone sees a secret word except the imposter, who gets a fake word or nothing. Discuss, debate, vote. The imposter scores if they survive
  2. Charades: one player guesses while everyone else sees the word and acts it out. Race the clock, score points, rotate the guesser each round

Both modes pull from 150+ words organized across seven categories (Animals, Food, Movies, Jobs, Objects, Places, Actions) at three difficulty levels. You pick 2-10 players, name each one, choose your settings, and play. The entire game runs in the browser after the initial load, so it works offline at a cabin, on a plane, or anywhere else without Wi-Fi.

How Does the Word Imposter Mode Work?

Word Imposter is the deception half of the game. One player secretly receives a different word (or no word at all) while everyone else shares the same secret word. The group discusses and tries to figure out who is bluffing.

The setup lets you configure:

  1. Imposter type: no word (hardest to bluff), a similar fake word (medium), or a random category word (easiest to bluff)
  2. Discussion timer: 60, 90, or 120 seconds for the debate phase
  3. Two imposters toggle: recommended for groups of six or more
  4. Rounds: 3, 5, 7, or 10

Each round flows through four phases. First, players pass the phone and tap to reveal their word privately. Then the discussion timer starts and everyone describes the word without saying it. The imposter must fake familiarity. After time runs out, each player votes on who they think is bluffing. Results show whether the group caught the imposter or got fooled.

Scoring rewards both sides: civilians earn 2 points for catching the imposter, but the imposter earns 3 for surviving. This asymmetry keeps the bluffer motivated even when outnumbered.

How Does the Charades Mode Work?

Charades is the physical acting half. One player becomes the guesser and looks away while everyone else sees the word on screen. The actors perform, the guesser shouts answers, and the clock counts down.

Gameplay in each round:

  1. Guesser is announced: the app displays who should look away
  2. Word reveals to actors: everyone except the guesser reads the word on screen
  3. Timer starts: 30, 60, or 90 seconds depending on your settings
  4. Correct or skip: tap Correct when the guesser nails it (new word appears) or Skip to move on without scoring
  5. Round ends: score tallied, guesser rotates to the next player

The Adults Mode toggle adds prompts like “awkward first date” and “pretending to work when the boss walks by” for groups that want spicier content. Categories and difficulty still apply, so you can mix family-friendly Animals on Easy with adult Actions on Hard in the same session.

How Does It Compare to Other Party Game Generators?

Most imposter game word generators and charades ideas generators online are single-purpose tools. You generate a word, copy it, and figure out the rest yourself. Guess the Word handles the full game loop: setup, word distribution, timers, voting, scoring, and results.

How Was This Party Game Built With No Code?

The game started as a text description in a chat. The user explained the two modes, the word categories, the pass-and-play flow, and the scoring system. MuleRun Chat generated the complete application: animated UI, sound effects, word banks with difficulty tiers, voting logic, timer system, confetti celebrations, and responsive mobile layout.

Revisions happened in the same conversation. The user asked for a discussion timer, an adults mode, similar fake words for the imposter (instead of just hiding the word), and a two-imposter option for larger groups. Each update went live at the same URL instantly.

You can start from this exact game using the Guess the Word template. Open it, describe what you want different (add a Pictionary mode, swap the word list for a specific theme, change the scoring), and Chat generates a new version.
